Staff frontend engineer setting technical strategy and owning architecture across multiple teams building Primer's merchant platform in TypeScript and React.
An Introduction to Primer
Primer is the unified infrastructure for global payments. We give finance and payments teams the visibility and control to reduce complexity, improve performance, and capture more revenue - all from a single platform.
Backed by Sofina, Peak XV Partners, ICONIQ, Tencent, Accel, and Balderton, weâre building the payments layer the worldâs best companies rely on.

The merchant experience is only as good as the platform behind it â and most of that experience is the interface itself.
The Account Experience team builds and owns the full platform merchants use to interact with Primer â from initial setup through to day-to-day operations, and increasingly through Primer AI Companion as a first-class interface. The team spans several connected areas: Primer Companion, Merchant Account Setup, Monitors, Workflows, Auditing, and the cross-cutting concerns that keep the whole merchant experience cohesive.
As Staff Engineer youâll set front-end technical direction across these areas, not within a single one. Youâll work across 2-3 teams, partner with multiple stakeholders, and stay hands-on in the implementation that matters most. The team runs a âyou build it, you own itâ model: engineers own their work from design through to production.
The stack includes TypeScript, React, and modern front-end tooling, sitting on top of services in Python, AWS, Kubernetes, and Terraform.
Setting and driving front-end technical strategy across the Account Experience teams, from architecture and component-system decisions through to hands-on implementation where it counts
Owning the architecture of a complex, data-dense merchant platform â the patterns, state management, and performance characteristics that hold up as the surface area grows
Shaping how Primer AI Companion matures as a first-class merchant interface, including the front-end architecture that makes a conversational surface feel native to the platform
Holding the experience coherent across Account Setup, Monitors, Workflows, and Auditing â building the shared component and design-system foundations that stop the areas drifting apart
Leading engineers across teams without direct authority, through code, design reviews, and technical mentorship that raises the front-end bar around you
Owning the things that are easy to neglect: accessibility, performance budgets, and front-end observability as first-class concerns, not afterthoughts
Partnering with Product and Design, and with backend engineers across teams, to shape decisions where front-end constraints or opportunities are material
Demonstrable experience operating at staff or principal level: setting front-end technical direction across multiple teams, not just within one
Deep front-end engineering expertise with TypeScript and React, and a track record of architecting complex, long-lived web applications
Real fluency in the things that separate good front-end from great: state management at scale, performance, accessibility, and component-system design
The kind of judgment that earns trust fast â engineers follow your technical lead because youâre right, not because of your title
Enough comfort across the stack to reason about the APIs and services your front-end depends on, and to partner with backend engineers as an equal
Strong written and verbal communication, including making complex technical decisions legible to Product, Design, and non-technical stakeholders
Comfort working in payments, fintech, or platform contexts is welcome, though depth of engineering matters more than the specific industry
You prefer a defined lane â at Staff level youâll be expected to find and shape the work across several teams, not wait for it to be handed to you
You think of front-end as the layer that just renders what the backend sends â here itâs a first-class engineering discipline with real architectural weight
You want a QA team to catch your bugs â we donât have one, and we donât plan to
Remote-first feels like a compromise to you â for us itâs deliberate, and it demands real discipline and strong async habits

Leads data engineering initiatives and infrastructure projects within a university's system administration office.
Design and maintain fullstack software systems including LLM-powered features, RAG systems, and knowledge base integrations for a government platform serving foster youth.
Skylight is a digital consultancy using design and technology to help government agencies deliver better public services. Weâre at the forefront of a civic movement to reinvent how all levels of government serve families, patients, and many others in todayâs digital world.
If you want to play a part in driving this critical movement forward, weâd love for you to join our growing team of public interest technologists.
The work we do matters.
At Skylight, software engineers design, implement, and maintain software systems to improve government services for the public. This software is built to meet the needs of young adults transitioning out of the foster care system.
Skylight is partnering with the Administration for Children and Families (ACF) to build Fostering the Future, a platform that helps young adults aging out of foster care find the resources they need, when they need them. Co-designed with former foster youth and launching in fall 2026, the platform uses traditional resource database behavior with AI to help young adults in foster care ask the questions they donât know to ask and access the resources they donât know exist. Youâll work on both the user experience and the resource set that makes it valuable.
Youâll engineer the platform end-to-end: a chat-like experience that pairs LLM features with a curated knowledge base of resources for foster youth. Day to day, that means designing RAG systems, agent interactions, tuning prompts, refining embeddings, and ensuring any LLM integration is accurate, safe, and genuinely useful. Our stack is Python (LangChain and FastAPI), Postgres with pgvector, Next.js, and embedding and chat models including Amazon Titan and Claude â but we care more about your experience optimizing LLM interactions with knowledge bases than about any specific tool.
Youâll join a small cross-functional team of researchers, designers, product managers, and engineers helping the roughly 20,000 young people who age out of foster care each year get the support theyâre entitled to. This is a fast-moving, zero-to-one effort â greenfield development on a new public-facing federal platform, at national scale.
Donât meet every qualification but think you can do the job? Weâd still love to hear from you. If youâre excited about the role, apply. We consider candidates with a range of backgrounds and experiences.
This is a full-time, exempt position.
This is a fully remote position.
This role may require a small amount of travel to Washington, DC.
As soon as possible.
We want to give you the most competitive salary possible. After all, you deserve it! To that end, we use the results of our interview process to determine what salary is most appropriate given your current level of seniority. For a Software Engineer at Skylight, the current salary ranges are as follows:
Your well-being is important to us, so we focus on supporting you in a variety of ways:
Our process includes a preliminary screen, a skills interview, a behavioral interview, and a reverse interview where you meet your potential team â usually four conversations across two to three weeks. Here are some tips to help you prepare for a successful interview:
